The signing on process changes slightly all the time, but it follows a basic pattern.

First, you should call Centrelink’s Newstart number, the most current of which is in the phone book.

You will be asked a series of questions, including

  • What was the date you last worked, or ceased employment (if this was a contract, you may be asked for a severance letter or other details from this employer).
  • The amount in your bank accounts (if this is under approximately one payment, or $450, you will be considered to be suffering from financial hardship. If you are above this amount, you will have money subtracted from your first few payments.
  • Are you single? (This includes defacto relationships - now with no minimum time living together).
  • Do you live by yourself?
  • Do you pay rent? If so, how much (you may be asked to provide proof of this)
  • Do you have any assets over $360,000 (houses, shares, etc).

You will have an appointment made to visit a Job Network advisor, and then a Centerlink appointment - where you will have to present a bank statement, and a whole lot of ID.

Kill Labor's Censorship Plans

Under Labor's new censorship plans, Art and Dole could be blacklisted without even committing a crime - and we could be fined $12,000 a day. Help fight it here.
