A reader has asked what jobs people find best to have while being an artist. We’ll open up a discussion here for your thoughts. Do you like your part time job to be in the arts? Or as far away from it as possible? Do you do arty side-projects to make money, or is that a big distraction?

What jobs have you found that most help your art career?

My job was always a waiter. That way I could leave my work behind at the end of the shift. I worked nights, which meant I had most of my days free for my practice. It was for a small family restaurant and I liked the people, so it was never a drain to come to work.

I find teaching the best job for me. I can draw off the excitement art school kids give to their work. It also helps to have access to things like photocopying, workshops, and connections that come through being attached to an institution.

Working stacking shelves are a good option. Most of the big ones have websites with information. Places like Ikea and biscuit factories are always looking for workers on their sites too. I find that a mindless job is the best type for me as I always have my mind full of other things.

Seasonal work where i work away for 3 months on a farm in fresh air, save most my money then take 2 months off to re focus on what is important.

3 on 2 off gives me a good work life balance.

You wont be a rich person doing it this way.. But your soul is happy.
